2nd Annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit (ISDS)
From August 8 - 11th the University of Ibadan's Centre for Sustainable Development (CESDEV) will be hosting the 2nd Annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit (ISDS).
Theme: Global Change and Sustainable Development: Challenges and Opportunities for South-South Cooperation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The need for sustainability derives from the experience of current development practices that are largely harmful to the environment, and involve threats to development opportunities of future generations. Globalisation has accelerated the spread of these practices, thereby negatively impacting on the environment, health and life chances of peoples across the world. The depletion of natural resources is also occurring at rates that may soon render the earth unable to sustain its population. Agenda 21 of UNCED expects nations to employ practices that will sustain resources and halt environmental degradation. Trans-boundary collaboration is thus considered crucial to achieving sustainability.
