Tsinghua University

The Master of Public Administration in International Development (MID), a two-year program of 45 credits at the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) at Tsinghua University, is designed to prepare students for careers as active global citizens and to enhance their understanding of China’s development experience. The MID program focuses on public policy from an international perspective, combining rigorous training in analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on Chinese practices and sustainable development.

Students take a minimum of 16 credits in elective courses, whose topics range from applied social-research methods to Chinese philosophy, and they are eligible as well for science and engineering courses offered in other departments of Tsinghua. Field training is offered in a range of disciplines, including agriculture, nutrition, health sciences, education, engineering, management, and environmental science.

The MID program draws students from across the globe. In recent years about half its enrollment has come from Africa and the Americas combined.

Tsinghua, established in 1911, is one of China's leading universities, with faculties in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, medicine, architecture, and law and with particular strengths in engineering and aerospace research. The School of Public Policy and Management, established in 2000, emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to policy issues. In partnership with government ministries, academic institutions, and international think tanks, SPPM has formed research institutes that sponsor workshops, conferences, publications, and various research projects.

Field Training Description:

Field-training sites in China offer MDP students at Tsinghua a stimulating environment in which they can cultivate their skills as development practitioners with the ability to adapt their work to a variety of social and economic circumstances. In the past thirty years, China has moved from a planned economy to a market economy, from a largely rural society to an increasingly urban and industrial society, and from a relatively closed society to one that is more open and dynamic. These changes have generated a growing disparity between the rich and the poor, between urban and rural, and between coastal regions and western regions. They have also produced the social and economic displacement of millions. Resource depletion and environmental pollution have grown worse at an alarming rate. While these challenges are daunting, they also offer exciting research opportunities for scholars and students of international development. The proposed sites of field study are designed for students to gain a better understanding of the advantages and pitfalls of various policy tools and development models.
