James Cook University

The Master of Development Practice (MDP) is a program of 48 credits that are typically completed in two years but may be distributed over a maximum of four. Graduates gain competence in a broad range of development issues and are equipped to influence policies and programs in developing countries in Asia, the Pacific, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Students will benefit from a multidisciplinary program that includes field-training opportunities in northern Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea, where students work in teams to tackle real-world problems.

The special challenges to sustainable development in coastal and tropical-forest regions are addressed through a special focus on insular Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The course provides students with the tools for understanding and addressing the root causes of extreme poverty while also preserving the environment for future generations.

The MPD program prepares its graduates for employment in government and with international agencies and donors active in the region. The program has a strong international character. Even so, its graduates are liable to find opportunities particularly in Australia—in, for example, the north, extractive industries, and indigenous communities.

From North Queensland in Australia, James Cook University (established 1970), in collaboration with universities in Indonesia and the Philippines, offers this MDP program whose emphasis is on Southeast Asia and the Pacific, a region that is home to tens of millions of the world’s poorest people.
