The Master's in Development Practice (MDP) is a full two-year program of 50 credits, including 12 core courses, 4 electives, and 2 consecutive summers (20 weeks) of experience working as “embedded” practitioners within leading humanitarian organizations in developing countries. The Emory MDP trademark features are its emphasis on systemic and integrated understandings of development and its small class-size, which enables customized learning and personalized mentoring by Emory faculty.
A major research university, Emory offers a wealth of expertise in the social, natural, health, and management sciences. Emory MDP students take courses in the Rollins School of Public Health (ranked 7th in the US), in the Goizueta School of Business (ranked 20th in the US), and from distinguished faculty in the departments of social sciences and environmental studies of Emory College. The Law School provides training in human rights related issues, rule of law and conflict resolution. The Candler School of Theology offers training in ethics and equity issues, interfaith relations, and peace building.
In addition to the core courses that constitute the MDP interdisciplinary curriculum, Emory MDP students can choose from a wide repertoire of elective courses to develop a concentration. Typical areas of concentration are global health and wellbeing; sustainable livelihoods and environments; rights, ethics, and governance; business, planning, and management, but students may design their own concentration, in consultation with a faculty advisor.
The Emory program also offers special workshops each semester to equip students with essential professional skills (ex. participatory research methods; qualitative data analysis; monitoring and evaluation, GIS and spatial analysis; leadership and teamwork). These workshops are typically taught by experienced development practitioners.
The Emory MDP benefits from the vicinity of other outstanding higher learning institutions, such as the University of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, and Morehouse College. Our close partnerships with CARE, the Carter Center, and the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC), all based in Atlanta, provide numerous opportunities for internships and networking

The Emory MDP Program is designed to produce a new kind of development professional-one who has the academic training necessary to understand the multi-dimensional causes of poverty as well as the practical skills needed to redress the limitations of current development approaches. The two summers of field research that students engage in are an essential component of their preparation as professionals.
PRE- FIELD TRAINING - The pre-fieldwork training helps students understand the distinctive nature of development issues in the specific socio-cultural, political-economic and environmental setting in which they will work.
YEAR ONE INTENSIVE FIELD PRACTICUM I - Students join ongoing projects at partner organizations that allow them to become familiar with key aspects of development practice. While in the field, students work closely with and receive mentorship from development professionals based in their host organization.
YEAR TWO INTENSIVE FIELD PRACTICUM II - Students return to the same site of year-one field practicum and collaborate with their host organizations in catalyzing constructive changes in the projects in which they have worked the previous summer.
